How KajaArts.com Came to Life

The story of KajaArts.com begins with a deep love and respect for India’s timeless artistic heritage — a legacy that spans over 5,000 years. From the prehistoric cave paintings of Bhimbetka, to the sculptures of the Mauryan and Gupta empires, and the murals of Ajanta and Ellora — Indian art has always reflected spirituality, culture, and storytelling.

Among the diverse traditions, three classical painting styles stand out for their significance and history: Madhubani, Pattachitra, and Kalamkari.

Madhubani Painting

From the Mithila region of Bihar, Madhubani is one of India’s oldest folk art forms. Traditionally painted by women using natural dyes and pigments, it features bold geometric patterns, flora, fauna, and mythological figures. Each piece tells a story of love, faith, and life.

Pattachitra Painting

Native to Odisha and West Bengal, Pattachitra art is painted on cloth scrolls using plant-based colors. These vivid artworks narrate tales of Jagannath, Radha-Krishna, Mahabharata, and Bhagavatam — blending bright hues, fine detailing, and sacred storytelling.

Kalamkari Painting

From Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, Kalamkari (literally "pen craft") involves hand-painting or block-printing mythological and floral designs onto cotton using natural dyes. It's a complex, multi-stage process that celebrates both textile art and narrative depth.

Our Moment of Realization

During a visit to a local handicraft fair, we were mesmerized by the intricate art — each piece told a story. But behind these creations were artists struggling for basic livelihood. Their work was rich in culture, yet they remained unseen.

Why is India’s art not seen and valued the way it should be?

That question sparked our purpose — and the birth of KajaArts.com.
